PyOhio 2020: Lighting & Thunder Talk Edition

PyOhio 2020 will be a virtual event held Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26, 2020!

We understand that many in our community have different time pressures now so with the change to a virtual event we have decided to change the talk formats. For 2020 we will be presenting:

  • 5-minute “Lightning Talks”
  • 10-minute “Thunder Talks”

Lightning talks give presenters an opportunity to introduce an idea. Thunder talks provide a bit more time to go in depth without requiring a large time commitment from presenters or attendees.

Talks will be pre-recorded and streamed during the event. They will be made available for viewing on-demand shortly after streaming. We will be providing an online venue for discussion and curated Q&A (optional for presenters.) We are also considering providing other content over the weekend.

We are working on opening the CFP soon. We plan to accept talk proposals through late May with acceptances going out in early June.

We are also working out details for sponsorship levels. If you are interested in sponsoring the event, please email

As always, registration will be free!

We will send another message when we’re ready to open the CFP and will include additional details then.

PyOhio 2020 Status & COVID-19 Update - March 31, 2020

It has become clear that holding a large public event in July will not be possible. Therefore, we regret to announce that:

PyOhio 2020 will not be held in-person at the Ohio Union in Columbus, OH on July 25-26.

We are considering options for a virtual event to be held on the same dates. We understand that in-person gathering and discussion are part of what makes PyOhio special so we're working to find a format that will allow us to provide a venue for meaningful connections for the PyOhio community.

We plan to release further details within the next two weeks via our newsletter and website.

We hope you stay safe and healthy.

PyOhio 2020 Status & COVID-19 - March 15, 2020

The health, safety, and wellbeing of the community is always our top priority. Keeping that in mind, and considering the current climate of uncertainty, we have decided to postpone the open of our CFP for now.

PyOhio 2020 is currently scheduled for July 25-26 in Columbus, OH. While the event is still more than four months in the future, mid-March is typically when we are confirming sponsorships and beginning our CFP process. Given the unknowns we felt it would be unfair to have people prepare proposals and start working on presentations at this time.

We’re committed to organizing the right event for the PyOhio community when it is appropriate. This may include changes to our schedule or format. In this situation we are fortunate that we run the event on a small budget and have little in the way of financial liabilities at this point in the process.

We plan to reassess the situation as we learn more and will provide an update here and via our newsletter by the end of March.

Take care of yourselves and each other out there.
